IPA Formally Requests Senate Informational Hearing on School Vaccine Exemption Policies

California deserves a public hearing!

On June 1, 2026, Informed Policy Advocates (IPA) formally submitted a request to the California Senate Health Committee calling for an informational hearing regarding California’s school vaccine medical exemption system and implementation practices.

This request follows statements made during the April Senate Health Committee hearing on SB 1377, where Committee Chair Senator Dr. Akilah Weber Pierson repeatedly stated that concerns surrounding California’s medical exemption policies would be more appropriately addressed through an informational hearing process.

IPA agrees.

An informational hearing would provide legislators, physicians, families, healthcare professionals, state agencies, and subject matter experts an opportunity to openly discuss:

  • Concerns regarding chilling effects

  • Educational impacts on California children

  • Access to medical exemptions for children with complex medical circumstances

  • Hospital and clinic policies related to medical exemptions

  • Transparency and accountability surrounding implementation practices

Public policy works best when concerns can be openly discussed, publicly reviewed, and thoughtfully examined.

In addition, former Senate Health Committee Chair Senator Caroline Menjivar publicly confirmed that IPA previously requested an informational hearing on this issue.
